Chicago, IL                                           October 2004

RESULTS:

BENCH:    303lbs.

    3RD PLACE OVERALL FEMALE

    3RD PLACE TEAM

MEET DESCRIPTION:

The 2004 World Bench War was another new concept in powerlifting. The Bench America promoters had run similar competitions around the world and decided to pit these super teams against each other. The 4 teams competing would be the US, Japan, Russia, and the Czech Republic. Each team was made up of a female, and the 4 super male weight classes. The weekend consisted of TV coverage, a golf outing, and sponsor parties, which were attended by the athletes. Which made for a very busy time for the athletes.

The lifting itself was run like a standard bench meet. Jen would be competing against the other females for team points based on Wilkes points. Jen was going to need a great day to win this one, with Japan’s Fukushima and Russia’s Nelyubova both World Record holders in attendance. Nelyubova was a heavier bodyweight then Jen and would be a heads up battle. Fukushima on the other hand was only around 103lbs and is a pound for pound phenom. Jen opened with 303lbs, but missed her grove and had to have the weight taken from her by the spotters. She got off the platform and said that there were no worries, she had just got a little loose. She repeated the 303lbs and like she had stated it was no worries and went up easy. With Fukushima already out of reach with a 270lb bench, the USA coaches decided to just go after Nelyubova. She had done 309lbs which was barely better then Jen’s 303 by Wilkes points. Jen tried the same 309lbs to beat her but again it looked very loose and she couldn’t lock it out. This left her in third for the female competition. It appeared with all the meets over the past year and the new baby that maybe Jen was over trained. Her lifts just didn’t look as tight as they usually do. The USA team also was only able to pull off a third place finish. I think some of the weekend events had taken their toll, many on the team struggled with weights they usually made easily.

Although the event was a great time, some time off and recovery before IPF Bench Worlds was definitely needed.
