2004 TARHEEL OPEN BENCH PRESS
RESULTS: BENCH: 315lbs. 1ST PLACE 132lb WEIGHT CLASS BEST FEMALE LIFTER MEET DESCRIPTION: The 2004 Tarheel Open was a bit of an after thought this year. It has been an event that Jen has enjoyed in the past due to the fact that it is local. It also gives proceeds to charity, which she likes. This year the meet was to fall on the first weekend of Spring Break and Jen had chosen not to compete. It was not because she hadn’t had great times at the meet before, but because she had some real important business to take care on. She had decided to start a family and needed to go to Pittsburgh to meet with a Russian adoption agency. The week before we had planned to leave for Pittsburgh, the meet director called and asked why she had not signed up. After explaining the situation to him, he told her he had already advertised that she was going to be there. As usual, Jen could not say no and to the meet she went. Luckily she rarely takes time off and always lifts hard so she was well trained for the meet. She opened with a pretty easy 295lbs, which as usual stunned a local small meet crowd. For her second lift everyone was ready for her to put up even bigger weight. She had called for 315lbs, but missed locking it out. Knowing that her head was not truly in the game, due to the fact that we were going to leave directly from the meet to Pittsburgh, she knew she needed to buckle done. No matter how many times you do it, you still need to mentally prepare yourself for every lift. She took 315lbs again on her 3rd attempt and it went up without difficulty. As soon as she got off the bench she said some quick goodbyes and off to Pittsburgh we went to start the adoption process. An important lesson was learned at this meet. Keep your training always at a high level and no matter the outside distractions you have to focus mentally to be at your best come meet day. |
