MEET DESCRIPTION:

It started out as an attempt to get her state referees license and ended up as an attempt at an American Record. Jen was to travel to Georgia for the Southern States Open to take her state referees license. Knowing she was coming to take her test the meet director asked her if she would compete. Although she was just off a tough stretch of meets, competing in Bench Worlds and Powerlifting Nationals in back to back months, she agreed. However, knowing she wouldn’t be in top form, she decided not to cut any weight and lift in the 148lb weight class at only 136 pounds.

The squat went fair. The opener at 287lbs. was easy, but you could tell that her form and snap wasn’t quite there. The second attempt of 308lbs. went up but was a bit of a struggle. Even though she wasn’t on her game she still tried to tie a personal record 325lbs. on her third attempt. She had it going, but got back on her heels and had to be bailed out buy some good spotting. It then became apparent it was going to be along day. Instead of resting between flights she had to referee the flight in between hers, and then quickly get ready for the next lift.

It was now time for her event the bench. This is why the meet director wanted her to lift, and it was obvious that the fans knew why she was there as well. She opened with an easy 275lbs. and even though she hadn’t had much time for rest, she decided to go right after the American Record. She called for 292lbs. and crushed the 148lb. American Record at only 136lbs. She tried to up the record on her third attempt and take it over 300 all at once. She took 303lbs. and had it about 2 inches from lockout for what seemed like 10 seconds until she finally told the spotters to take it.

On to the deadlift, not being able to relax and rest between flights and instead having to referee was now starting to take its toll. Tired from the long day was affecting her form but she still got her opener of 292lbs. and her second attempt at 347lbs. wasn't an  issue. She went for a personal record of 375lbs. on her third attempt. She got bent over and didn’t have the strength after the long day to finish it.

All in all it had not been a bad day. A new American Bench Record in the 148lb weight class. A 6 for 9 day. First place in the 148lb weight class and the best lifter award. Not to mention passing her state referee exam.
