2000 NATIONAL BENCH PRESS CHAMPIONSHIPS

St. Louis, MO                                                                            September 2000

RESULTS:

BENCH:    253.5lbs.

    2ND PLACE 132lb WEIGHT CLASS

MEET DESCRIPTION:

The second time at the Bench Press National Championships and the results were the same, second place. This came as a huge disappointment to Jennifer who came only for the win. Weight loss is still tough but doesn’t seem to be as big an issue as it was previously. However, Jen still seems to be thinking too much and not competing enough.

Jen’s first attempt of 253.5 lbs. was easy and tied the existing American record. This put her into first place. On her second attempt, at 265 lbs., her wrist buckled and she lost the weight. This is the first time this has ever happened either in practice or in a meet. This is part of the over thinking process that has her making mistakes in the pressure situations. Altizer, the defending champ did 259 lbs. on her second attempt to take the lead. On her third and final attempt, Jen chose 270 lbs. needing to go for the win. The bar went up easy, the crowd started to cheer, and the announcer called “good lift”. Then came two out of three red lights and a no lift was called for an uneven extension. Jen, myself, and most of the crowd disagreed but the judge’s calls are final. This gave Jennifer second place, again, although she certainly appeared to be the strongest in her weight on this day.

Jennifer was obviously disappointed, after training for a year to win the Nationals, and losing on an uneven extension. I think that most of the problem is mindset and if she can learn to compete instead of think her potential is unlimited. It is however, hard to bench enough to tie the world record and not have it count. The hard work will continue and Jen will wait and see if she gets invited to be on the World Team again this year.

Special Thanks to Richard Weed and Carol Latta Chromosome Donors
