    MICHIGAN BENCH PRESS RECORD

MEET DESCRIPTION:

Jennifer competed in her first powerlifting meet. It was a great learning process for both athlete and coach. First was weight loss, then battling the nerves, and finally came actually lifting the weights. Powerlifting meets consist of three events the squat, bench, and dead lift. You get three lifts in each event and your best attempt in each event counts toward your total score.

Jen had to lose around 6 pounds to get down to the 132-pound weight class. Her diet was helped out by her nerves, which caused some stomach upset, which in turn caused some unexpected fluid lose and got her down to weight. While Jen was dieting there was a coaches meeting at a local establishment till around 2:00 am. I am sure Jen appreciates the coach’s dedication and will to stay out so late discussing important strategies.

The nerves showed early in the competition with continued trips to the bathroom. The first event was the squat where Jen almost bombed out of the meet. On her first two tries at 185 lbs. she did not go deep enough so the lifts did not count. If she missed her third attempt she would be out of the meet. With the crowd spurring her on she gutted out a deep 185 and was back in the meet.

Next was the bench press, Jen’s best event. Again the nerves reared their ugly head and she forgot to pause at the bottom of her first attempt of 185 lbs. On the second attempt, at 185, she finally got down to business and made it look easy. Now came to the final attempt, We decided to try 235 lbs. This would be a new Michigan 132 lb. Bench Press record by 50 lbs., and more importantly, more than any woman had ever benched, all weight classes, in Michigan history. Again, with the crowd behind her and cheering so loud you could hardly hear the commands, Jennifer made 235 lbs. look pretty easy.

Now the final event the dead lift. Jennifer only learned how to dead lift two days before the meet. She started light with 185 lbs. and then did an easy 225. For the third and final attempt we chose 295 lbs. which would give her 715 lbs. and enough to qualify for Powerlifting Nationals. It was a tough lift but successful. With a 715 lb. total she was the 132-pound champion as well as the Best Female Lifter of the meet.

Finally, Jennifer met CJ Batten, a prominent powerlifting coach, who convinced her to compete in Bench Press Nationals in September. He also gave some excellent coaching tips. She would also like to give a big thanks to all the friends and relatives who came out to support her at the meet.

Special Thanks to Richard Weed and Carol Latta Chromosome Donors
